Touring around Kuala Terengganu :)

Time flies! This week marks the 6th week since i've started my new journey up here. I'm currently in the community medicine posting and come the 8th week, we'll be moving on the next posting.

People have been asking me if i have taken a tour of K.Terengganu and the answer is a yes. We've been visiting quite a few places in this posting such as Bukit Payong Maternal & Child Health Clinic, Vector Control Unit in the hospital, Kemaman International Health Port.

Today, we went on Home Visits (Yes, it is similiar to visitations. haha.. )

We followed the hospital psychiatric team to the homes of patients undergoing rehabiltative care. It was indeed interesting to go into the depths of the kampung areas and be exposed to the living conditions of this schizophrenic patients. Most of the houses had chickens, ducks, cats, turkeys freely roaming outside the house and even making themselves comfortable inside the house.

The purpose of the home visits was to check on the patients condition, give medication (once a month) and also injections fortnightly to those with poor compliance. The common perception of psychiatric patients is that they're mad and aggresive people (remember the Holloywood movies?) However, in actual fact <1%>of them are actually aggressive & they suffer mainly from delusions, hallucinations and the lack of ability to control themselves. The community's perception and behaviour towards them have not helped much as they have such low self esteem of themsleves. Now that i have a better understanding i feel more empathetic towards them & thus changing my perception as well.

Tomorrow, they'll be another visit to another health clinic situated about 30 mins from town. Will update more on that. Signing off now to get ready for the badminton finals later *grins*
