Today marks the end of the 1st week of internal medicine. One adjective : Exhaustive..
But so far, it has been a very interesting week. Our time is always filled with classes, bed side teachings (BST's) and even more BST's. Coming from the pediatrics posting, this posting is indeed different from the previous one. For one, the patients have increase in size e.g. from a small size toddler to full blown adults. And two, since they have increased in size, their beds are obviously larger and more space occupying, hence leading to a very full & crowded ward. If i have mentioned that the Pediatrics Ward is crowded with mothers, children, housemen's etc, in this ward add in daughter, sons, aunties, uncles, grandmother, grandfather, friends and foes (haha.. i'm just kidding about that one)
Bed side teaching's are one of the best methods of teachings. I am still amazed every time we see positive signs and symptoms in a patient. Its as if the theory learnt from the books for the past 2 years have suddenly come alive and it brings a whole new meaning to that particular disease. As our lecturers would say : all the beautiful signs are there! *grins*
This week i had the oportunity to perform my 1st venepucture (or in other words : poking a patient and taking blood for tests) on my own. The experience was amazing. Want to know more? Tip : get a volunteer to lend u their arm *laughs* okays, a little hint : it was a rather jumbled feeling of excitement plus nervousness. Next, i'd be looking forward to practicing on a lady. They have finer and less visible veins so that'll be a slight challenge. Thank you Jesus!
